“I’m going to nuke you”: HRC at ISMUN 2025

by Elena Dai

Before the afternoon session began, the delegates of different countries seemed to have already bonded well, continuous chatter filled the room, creating a relaxed atmosphere while they talked about abortion and women rights, with delegates remarked “we’re all just humans, why is there a gender war in the first place?” prompting another response, “see? This is why I like your vibe!”

Today’s topic focuses on the humanitarian crisis in the Myanmar War. The conference aimed to provide solutions of how humanitarian aid can be delivered to conflict zones without being intercepted by military posts, as well as discuss the ways of how the international community can step in to end the civil war and maintain long-term peace and stability.

When the afternoon conference has commenced, the delegates continued with the General Speaker’s List, where several suggested establishing a clear framework of the consequences, implementing sanctions, and funding aid for Myanmar. The delegate of Myanmar also proposed disarmament, demobilisation, and reintegration (DDR).

Soon enough, the long awaited UNMOD session started, and delegates of different countries quickly huddled into two distinct blocs, namely the UK bloc and the Iran bloc.

During the UNMOD session, discussions were marked by moments of seriousness, which apparently did not last long. The UK bloc decided to name their bloc “Supporting Intervention for the Goodness of Myanmar Assistance”, short for S.I.G.M.A.. The UK delegate, the main submitter of the bloc, announced the resolution speech would start with “we are S.I.G.M.A.” and the rest of the delegates will respond with a collective howl:

“Imagine a bunch of people in suits just going ‘AWOO’!”

Later on, an arm wrestling competition erupted on the stage. The delegate of China and Spain challenged each other, with China winning. Surprisingly, the delegate of Poland came up to challenge China and won as soon as the competition began.

“I’M GOING TO NUKE YOU,” shouted the delegate of China in mock outrage after the defeat, resulting in laughter and applause throughout the room.

The UNMOD session consisted of highlights including the delegate of Spain showcasing unexpected moonwalking skills in front of everyone, and the delegate of Venezuela dancing enthusiastically while other delegates chanted the lyrics. This ended immediately when the chairs bursted into the room and demanded the continuous work on their resolutions.

After a few minutes, the chairs announced the kicking off of the resolution speeches. The delegate of the UK began introducing the resolution first, which consists mainly of providing humanitarian assistance, enforcing sanctions, creation of a third party organisation, and creating an economical transition. On the other hand, the Iran bloc’s also proposed similar solutions, which includes but not limited to facilitating unity amongst different parties and ethnic groups, imposing sanctions, as well as providing humanitarian aid.

However, the delegate of Argentina stated that advising the Security Council to formulate an ultimatum towards the Myanmar Military Junta would help stopping the military junta from getting resources.

This session concluded with the delegates voting for the passing of the UK bloc outweighed that of the Iran bloc, with three-quarters of the room raising their placards into the air. The resolution of the Iran bloc does not pass while the UK bloc succeeded, applause follows.
